The Importance of Copyright Compliance

It has never been more important to ensure that your organization handles copyrighted documents in a compliant fashion. In recent years publishers and other rights holders have taken a hard line in protecting their intellectual property, engaging in numerous lawsuits against perceived infringers. While digital technology has allowed for huge improvements in our ability to access content directly, it has also caused serious confusion regarding the rights associated with that content. In today’s world, corporations are required to make difficult legal decisions regarding compliancy on a daily basis.

While this may be difficult, its importance can not be overstated. When a user accesses copyrighted content, they do not own the rights associated with that content! This is the very basis of copyright. In fact, most businesses profit from the laws that protect their intellectual property. When companies choose to violate these laws they can face stiff fines and penalties, as well as the embarrassment of being dragged through the courts and the media.

Acting compliantly not only protects a company from legal action, it also serves to protect the company’s own intellectual property. Ensuring that employees are well versed in the rules of copyright is a win/win situation for all.
